When Are Most Website Administrators Logging On?
When are youth sports websites being updated?
Demosphere powers around 1,000 sports websites that are administrated by users nationwide. Administrators have 24/7 on-demand access to update news, photos, and more on their sites.
While administrators can login whenever they please, we noticed some interesting trends from 142,000+ logins from January 1 to June 30, 2014.
Weekday Usage
- 9:00am – 4:00pm ET was most popular login window.
- 10:00am – noon ET were peak hours.
Many have speculated in the past that administrators are updating their sites after hours – after the work day and potentially after children have gone to sleep. While some do update during these times, the majority do not.
The most popular days of the week for updates were Monday and Tuesday – not surprising as many games and newsworthy items occur on the weekend. Fewer users logged in as the week progressed.
Saturday Usage:
- 9:00am – 2:00pm ET was most popular login window.
- 10:00a – noon ET were peak hours.
While peak usage time on Saturday was similar to the weekdays, the quantity fell dramatically. While an average 9,000+ users logged in each weekday from 10:00am to noon ET, less than half (around 3,600) did on Saturday.
Not surprisingly, Saturday evening saw the lowest usage of any evening – people like to disconnect!
Sunday Usage:
- 5:00pm – 9:00pm ET was most popular login window.
- 8:00pm – 10:00pm ET were peak hours.

Sunday was the more popular of the weekend days and user behavior changed, too. Sunday evening was the most popular evening of the week, and that activity carried over into Monday and Tuesday as we discussed above. Many administrators seem to be getting an early jump on the week!
Overall:
- People sleep! Midnight – 8:00am ET was the slowest time.
- Aside from Sunday night, weekends were slow too.
Overall, the data surprised us! Evenings and weekends were much slower than anticipated, while weekday morning updates saw much more traffic. For those administrators that are volunteers, are they taking a break from work to make updates?
