Twitter Posts Draw Sports Suspension
A lesson in social media etiquette has cost one college player a chance to play in a playoff tournament game.
Stephanie McCaffrey, a Sophomore soccer player at Boston College, was suspended from today’s NCAA tournament game at Penn State after making a series of tweets about the Jerry Sandusky scandal. McCaffrey has apologized for her remarks.
The situation raises an important ongoing point in social media usage – you are responsible for your comments! Keep this basic rule in mind – if you’re not comfortable seeing your message on a highway billboard, you probably shouldn’t post it.
At the high school and college level, are you familiar with any organizations (youth sports organizations, schools, colleges, etc) that either provide social media usage advice and/or control/restrict usage? If so, has it been successful? Let us know!
