Differing Views On Youth Sports – Rec vs. Competitive

Millions of kids play rec soccerThe New York Times tackled youth sports earlier this week in their ‘Taking Sides’ column.

On one side, Lisa Catherine Harper argued for all the benefits of competitive sports including teamwork, discipline, and how to take direction, among others.

On the other side, KJ Dell’Antonia argues for the benefits of recreational sports including becoming more well rounded, having the ability to love something without being 100% dedicated, and financial considerations, among others.

Both present compelling cases for their respective sides and both are probably right. There probably isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach that truly works for everyone in the youth sports environment.

Which perspective do you gravitate towards? Are rec or competitive sports better for your child? Let us know in the comments below!
